Battle of Britain Memorial Special

2010 marks the 70th Anniversary of one of the most momentous battles in British history.  To herald the occasion several new books have been, and continue to be published, accounting the Battle.  This month's include Battle of Britain by Alfred Price, who recounts the story of the conflict both in terms of the strategic and tactical battle between two mighty air forces on the day and the fascinating yet traumatic element as those on the ground faced the reality of a German invasion.  Submarine Spitfire by the same author details perhaps the most successful fighter plane of all time.  During WWII it occupied a unique place in the psyche of the British people, playing a major part in saving the nation from defeat during the grim days of 1940.  Battle of Britain, An Illustrated Tribute to the Heroic Few by Nigel Cawthorne is a picture-led account of those who won the war for Britain.  It's appeal is huge being a beautiful book at the same time as graphically showing those interested in military and social history the scenes we cannot even imagine from a gruesome war.  Finally, Voices from the Battle of Britain by Henry Buckton voices the stories of surviving veterans, those 'ordinary' participants who can remember their experiences and personal memories of the heroes who have always been the protagonists in most historical accounts.  Among those included are pilots Douglas Bader, Johnnie Johnson and Adolf Galland and leaders Hugh Dowding and Winston Churchill.  A fitting line up of beautifully written books to commemorate this significant occasion.

Notes to my Daughter

A Father's Blitz Diary

RRP £7.99

When Christine Cuss was born her doting father began a journal addressed to her.  His record continued into the country's preparation for war and through the battle itself.  This rare historical document shows another side to the Second World War and provides a fascinating insight into a father torn between his duty to his country and to his family, especially his only daughter Christine.
